What learning materials do you require your students to have?
Students are REQUIRED to bring their school-issued device and charger, a composition notebook, a glue stick, and scissors. The notebook, glue, and scissors will be used regularly to safe-keep the guided notes for each lesson. Students are also required to show their complete work for each assigned homework on MathXL/MathLab. Graphing calculators are available in the classroom for use.
Is there anywhere I can find the notes or presentations used in class?
The lesson slide presentations are both available in Schoology and in this website (under For Students menu). I also maintain a YouTube channel that houses video recordings of the lessons, which are also accessible in both Schoology and this website.
Is tutoring available?
The school offers in-person tutoring before and/or after school. There are also some options for free online tutoring, like Varsity Tutors (through the AZ Department of Education) and AmeriCorps Math tutoring (through the University of Arizona). Read more here.
I can't stay after school for tutoring. When can I come in if I need your help?
Consultation hours are from 7:30 to 8:05am or by appointment after school. I highly recommend that the student inform or email me first before coming to my room so I can let the student know if I won't be available due to other engagements (i.e. meeting, training, etc).
What's the difference between a soft deadline and a hard deadline?
Each assigned work in MathXL has a deadline that tells you when the assignment is due. This is the "soft" deadline since I still accept work turned in past this date. The "hard" deadline is when all assigned work will be closed and inaccessible.
Do you accept late work?
Yes. Students are consistently reminded to submit missing or late work for credit, but with some deduction as penalty. Also, if they already did the work and the score is not that good (ex. they got a 50% on that assignment), they can still go back and redo the homework and get a better score. As long as the assignment name in MathXL is in blue (or an active link), students can still work and do them.
I will be not be in class for a week. How can I catch up with work?
A video recording of me teaching the lessons are available in Schoology and in this website. They are usually found right below each lesson PowerPoint because these videos are intended to be an extra resource. I have a school-related activity on the day of our scheduled test. Can I take the test early?
Students usually inform me of a future absence and will make up the assessment they missed. With appropriate communication and reasonable excuse, I allow students to take tests earlier than scheduled. It must be noted that the early test must be done outside of the class period (before school, during Cougar Hour, or after school).
I'm doing all the assignments. Why am I still failing the class?
Typically, the main reason for students not passing is because of failed or missing chapter/unit tests or quizzes. Assessments for Mastery like tests and quizzes make up 75% of the semester grade – meaning, any failed or missing test or quiz can drastically pull the grades down.
What can I do to improve my grade?
Students are consistently reminded to retake tests or quizzes they failed or want to improve. They are allowed 1 retake for each test or quiz. Retakes may be scheduled to be done: a) Mon to Fri before school (7:20-8:05) or b) after school during tutoring from 3:25-4:25 in L51.
